UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply Manages Power Failures Safely
We recommend adding an UPS, a battery backup, to your Server or any computer on your system that collects data. A Backup supply maintains a continuous supply of electric power to your computer for a short time in case you lose power to your system, or there is power sag (brown-out) or a voltage spike (surge).
-
When there is a power break or outage for any reason, you can lose the data you had not backed up yet.
- Programs and data can become corrupted during a power interruption or brown-out.
- Power breaks or surges can damage your computer equipment.
A Battery Backup gives you time to finish what you are doing and shut down your equipment properly.
How it works:
Your computer is plugged into the Battery Backup and the Backup is plugged into a power outlet. As long as AC current is normal, it passes through the Battery Backup to your computer.
In the event of any power change, the Uninterruptible Power Supply takes over and provides DC power by way of a battery until power is stabilized or returned. This is a simple solution and is not expensive. If you live/work in an area of relatively stable power supply, this is less urgent than if you live/work in an area with frequent power glitches. All Areas Have Power Fluctuations for no reason that you can explain.

How large should your Battery Backup be?
For single computers or smaller networks with a server and a few (up to 15) workstations, a Standby Backup is sufficient. For larger networks, you may want to choose a larger Uninterruptible Power Supply and a different design.
Our suggestion is that you need only a “safety net” that will allow you to shut down your computer and network safely with no data loss. It is difficult to predict how long you have, depending on the number of devices and the power of your server, but 15 min should be plenty!

For servers in a RAID environment, a 900VA UPS works well,
- For a stand-alone computer/server, choose a 700VA UPS, and
- For workstations, a 550VA UPS is adequate.
APC is a leader in this field. There are many models to choose from and they all work well.
