Computer Backup Software

The best computer backup software:

  • is easy to use when selecting files to backup,
  • is easy to use when restoring one or more files,
  • needs automated disaster recovery capability if you don't have RAID.
  • has ability to schedule automatic backups, and
  • has regular aplication updates through the internet.
EMC Retrospect for Windows Professional is the number one choice in just about everyone's book. The Professional Version is loaded on one computer and also allows you to back up from up to two client machines on your network if they also contain information not stored on the server. Retrospect has already been updated for Vista on PC's and is available for Macintosh and Linx platforms. If you are running Microsoft Server 2000 or 2003, you will need to purchase a Disk-To-Disk, Multi Server, or Single Server Business Edition.

Retrospect will back up to any type of storage device from thumb drives to external hard drives. Retrospect Express comes packaged with many external hard drives, but it does not have the scheduling feature among other features and that is critical in our opinion.

You can purchase a host of single computer backup softwares designed for home use in the $50-$100.00 range. Some of them are pretty good.

In our opinion, Retrospect Software in the $90-$130.00 price range is the best buy for your money.
