Choosing Computer Hardware
Choosing computer hardware, whether it is a "workstation" or a "server" takes some technical knowledge which we are happy to share.
We are assuming a few things here! In our Basic Assumptions, we are talking about a PC, not a MAC or a mini computer with Microsoft as your operating system. Macs are great for some applications, but the great majority of business machines are PC's and these are our focus. While there are other operating software packages on the market, Microsoft is by far the most full featured and works with the most software applications on the market today.
Here are some important considerations in your decision:
- Computer technology doubles in speed every 18-24 months. This is the Processor (CPU) but it also means your RAM, FSB (front side bus), HDD's (hard disk drives), video cards, and more. Within 4 years of purchasing your computer, your computer is 4X slower than the newer computers! Accept that you will be choosing computer hardware every 3-4 years.
- You know those "Great Deals" you can find for computers? Usually they are great deals because those computers are the older technology, usually 2 years behind, and you will run considerably slower for the life of the computer.
- Computer hardware is a very competative field. Since the cost to assemble your computer is the same, the difference in price is in the quality of the components used!
- Upgrading your less expensive or older computer is almost never a good idea because labor is so expensive! It is a better bet to start with the best your budget will allow.
- "The latest and greatest" hardware is usually pricey, and more advanced compared to software packages. The new processors are 64 bit, but most software applications are only 32 bit. You need to choose hardware that supports your current software and the software upgrades that are likely to occur over the next 3 years.
